FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

WHAT IS THERAPY LIKE? WHAT SHOULD I EXPECT IN MY FIRST SESSION WITH YOU?

Therapy is a little bit like taking a peek into that junk drawer you've been avoiding. The items inside the drawer are different for each person, and they change over time. At one point or another, every item in that drawer has had a hold on you. But in order to organize the drawer, you have to be willing to open it up and face what's inside. Only then can you begin to sort through the remnants. This can be a transformative experience when taken on with the right professional - one who is able to encourage you to sort through the belongings one by one, asking you to consider which parts get to stay, which parts need to go, and which parts might serve their purpose better in another place. Take a moment to consider how it would feel to clear the drawer and release the ties that have taken up so much room in your life.

An initial intake session will likely feel much different than the sessions that follow. In the first session, my primary goal is to gain an understanding of what brought you to my office as well as the factors surrounding that decision including family, friends, work, and the various life experiences that have led you to this point in your life. There are many parts that make up You, so it's not always possible to complete an intake in a single session. Once this information has been gathered, we can begin discussing a plan to alleviate your discomfort and devise some solutions for long-term wellness.

WILL THERAPY MAKE ME FEEL BETTER? CAN YOU HELP ME?

That is certainly the hope! Every individual is different and therefore will have differing needs in order to reach their ideal wellness goals. If at any point in our time working together you feel as though we're not headed in the right direction, I strongly encourage you to share your concerns so we can course correct.

DO YOU ACCEPT INSURANCE?

Though I am not in network with any insurance companies, I am happy to announce that starting January 2024 I will be partnering with Thrizer to help make therapy more accessible to you. Thrizer helps lower your out-of-pocket cost by covering the difference between your out-of-network co-pay and the cost of services. For example, if your co-pay is 55-, your card will be charged that amount at the time of our session, and Thrizer will cover the remaining 100-. Thrizer then files your out-of-network insurance claim and receives the reimbursement from your insurance provider. Please visit www.Thrizer.com to learn more.

If you choose to forego participation with Thrizer or are otherwise deemed ineligible to utilize their services, I am happy to file your out-of-network insurance claims for individual sessions so you can get reimbursed directly based on your benefits. Please note that couples sessions are not a covered benefit by most insurance companies, therefore I am unable to file for out-of-network benefits on your behalf. â€‹

DO YOU OFFER SLIDING SCALE RATES?

I offer a limited number of reduced-rate slots on my caseload. Reduced rates are available for a period of 6 months, at which time I can refer you to another practitioner or community resource that may provide services at a lower rate, otherwise at the end of the 6 month period sessions would be charged at the typical rate.

I'M A TEEN LOOKING FOR SOMEONE TO TALK TO. CAN I REACH OUT?

At this time, my practice focus is on adult individuals and couples, so I am therefore unable to provide services to anyone under the age of 18. If you are a minor or a caregiver for a minor trying to get connected with therapy services, I advise taking a look at PsychologyToday.com and filter results to show those who work with teens.

WHAT SHOULD I DO IF I’M THINKING OF HURTING MYSELF OR SOMEONE ELSE? I DON’T WANT TO GET HOSPITALIZED, BUT I REALLY NEED HELP RIGHT NOW.

If you or someone you know is unable to keep themselves or others safe, there are immediate support options available. You can reach out to the mental health crisis hotline by calling or texting 988 to speak with a trained mental health first responder who can help get you through this crucial moment. Additionally, you can present at your nearest emergency room or call 911. It can be scary to take that step to reach out for help. Please know that in most cases, crisis workers’ least preferred choice is involuntary hospitalization, and most will exhaust all other options before taking that step. There are many crisis interventions that exist to get help if you or someone you know is having suicidal thoughts, thoughts of self-harm, or thoughts of hurting others, and not all of them involve inpatient care. Each case is different, and at the end of the day, your safety is the absolute priority.

ARE YOU ALLIED WITH THE LGBTQIA+ COMMUNITY? WHAT OTHER SOCIAL CAUSES DO YOU SUPPORT?

Yes, proudly so! I believe that sexuality is an integral part of a person’s identity and thus strongly support LGBTQIA+ rights. Additionally, I stand in solidarity with trans and non-binary folks as well as those in the kink and poly communities. I am a supporter of equal access to housing, employment, voting, food, physical and mental healthcare, childcare, and physical/mental/emotional/social/spiritual/sexual safety. I am an advocate for racial justice and a staunch supporter of the Black Lives Matter movement. I believe abortion is healthcare. I believe in a person’s right to make decisions regarding the health and wellbeing of themselves and those in their care and to make their own choices regarding reproduction without governmental interference. Abortion rights matter and should be protected and available, safely, to all. I believe sex work is work and that sex workers deserve a safe, respectful work environment. I believe in practicing from a lens of Health at Every Size and challenging societal norms promoting “diet” and “wellness” culture. I believe our environment is our most precious, limited resource and that individuals as well as corporations must take action to protect what we have and reverse the effects of climate change to whatever extent possible. If there are causes important to you that are not addressed here, please know I am more than happy to discuss my position!
